Today’s Tasting Acts 17
Paul and Silas were on a missionary journey and it was their habit to seek out the local Jewish synagogue in each city they visited. They reasoned and argued with the Jews from the scripture concerning the eternal salvation in the kingdom of God through Jesus Christ.
In Thessalonica, the gospel was presented and some Jews believed, along with a great number of Greeks, and leading women. But, the Jews that did not believe were jealous and set a mob against Paul and Silas.
The believers sent Paul and Silas out of town and they passed through the town of Beroa where “they received the word with all eagerness” (Acts 17:11). They were ready to receive. It was reported that the Beroeans searched the scriptures daily to see if the words of Paul’s teaching verified scripture.
But the angry non-believers from Thessalonica found Paul and Silas and followed them to wreak havoc. The Beroeans sent Paul out, but Silas and Timothy remained.
Paul went to Athens where he preached Jesus and the resurrection. Those in Athens spent their leisure time around Mars Hill discussing philosophy and the gods.
When some heard Paul preaching on the street, they took him to Mars Hill and requested to know about this new deity he spoke of and gave him a chance to talk. Paul was grieved with the false idols and idol temples built around the city. He specifically addressed a shrine he saw that was dedicated to ‘the unknown god.’ He taught them about God the Father, the Creator of heaven and earth. He shared the salvation through Jesus. Many scoffed at the idea of a resurrection, but some were ready to receive and believed.
Today’s Nourishment: The Bible clearly states that Jesus was the Son of God, a sinless man who bore the punishment of sin in our place upon the cross, and rose from death after three days providing victory over death, hell and the grave. This salvation procures eternal life for all those who believe in Him as Lord and Savior. This is the message, which Paul preached.
Are you ready to believe as the Beroeans received the Word and believed?
As a believer, perhaps, you are ready to receive His Word and believe God to help you mature as a believer, handle life circumstances, or make decisions. Pray and search the scriptures as the Beroeans searched them and ready yourself to receive.
Perhaps you are ready to receiving the gospel accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior:
“Jesus, I choose to believe in you as my Lord and Savior. I believe that you died on the cross in my place and took my sin and punishment upon yourself. Thank you for your sacrifice; I receive your salvation. I believe that the only way to Father God is through you. I am ready to receive. It is in your holy name that I pray, amen.”
