Today’s Tasting: 1 Chronicles 7–10: These four chapters list the genealogy of the Israelites from the tribes of Issachar, Benjamin, Naphtali, the half tribe of Manasseh, the half tribe of Ephraim, and the tribe of Asher. Chapters 8 to 10 detail the genealogy of Saul, who became the first king of Israel, and recount his tragic death and the deaths of his sons.
The writer intersperses a few personal descriptions in these passages as well. For example, chronicling the tribe of Ephraim, speaking of Beriah, “His daughter was Sheerah, who built Upper and Lower Beth Horan as well as Uzzen Sheerah” (1 Chronicles 7:24). The descendants of Asher were “heads of families, choice men, brave warriors and outstanding leaders” (7:40). The chapters describe the families of the musicians, temple workers, priests, gatekeepers, and many more who served God well and faithfully.
Chapter 9 begins, “All Israel was listed in the genealogies recorded in the book of the kings of Israel. The people of Judah were taken to Babylon because of their unfaithfulness.” And speaking of the demise of King Saul at the end of chapter 10, “Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord … he did not keep the word of the Lord … he did not inquire of the Lord.”
Today’s Nourishment: As Christians, we are part of a family tree so much larger than that of our earthly ancestors. God knows every name in all of eternity and you are just as important to Him as any of the ones listed in these verses. You are His child. You are in His family tree and are an heir if Christ Jesus is your Lord and Savior.
A few of the names listed in the Chronicles were heralded for their distinction and excellence in their work. Others were lost or forgotten because of their unfaithfulness to God.
What will your spiritual legacy be? As long as you breathe you have time to make your life count. Don’t be taken captive by the enemy, who wants to stop you from living the life you were called to. Don’t live an unfulfilled life because of unfaithfulness to God. Instead, live the life He has called you to. Walk in His specific plan for your life and leave a true spiritual legacy. Make a difference for the generations to come. Every person counts to God the Father. Make your life count for Him.
