Only you can make the choice to set up a new way to be loved and love others. It is easy to say I love, but love is the action that changes. Love is Defined in scripture.
If I were to speak with eloquence in earth’s many languages, and in the heavenly tongues of angels, yet I didn’t express myself with love, my words would be reduced to the hollow sound of nothing more than a clanging cymbal. And if I were to have the gift of prophecy with a profound understanding of God’s hidden secrets, and if I possessed unending supernatural knowledge, and if I had the greatest gift of faith that could move mountains, but have never learned to love, then I am nothing. And if I were to be so generous as to give away everything I owned to feed the poor, and to offer my body to be burned as a martyr, without the pure motive of love, I would gain nothing of value. Love is large and incredibly patient. Love is gentle and consistently kind to all. It refuses to be jealous when blessing comes to someone else. Love does not brag about one’s achievements nor inflate its own importance. Love does not traffic in shame and disrespect, nor selfishly seek its own honor. Love is not easily irritated or quick to take offense. Love joyfully celebrates honesty and finds no delight in what is wrong. Love is a safe place of shelter, for it never stops believing the best for others. Love never takes failure as defeat, for it never gives up. Love never stops loving. It extends beyond the gift of prophecy, which eventually fades away. It is more enduring than tongues, which will one day fall silent. Love remains long after words of knowledge are forgotten. Our present knowledge and our prophecies are but partial, but when love’s perfection arrives, the partial will fade away. When I was a child, I spoke about childish matters, for I saw things like a child and reasoned like a child. But the day came when I matured, and I set aside my childish ways. For now we see but a faint reflection of riddles and mysteries as though reflected in a mirror, but one day we will see face-to-face. My understanding is incomplete now, but one day I will understand everything, just as everything about me has been fully understood. Until then, there are three things that remain: faith, hope, and love—yet love surpasses them all. So above all else, let love be the beautiful prize for which you run. (—1 Corinthians 13 TPT) [1]
The fruit of the Spirit is love. (—Galatians 5:22) [2]
Communicating Love started with the Lord. And He demonstrated His love first to us. In the Old Testament, God gave ten ways to love God and love others to Moses. As the children of Israel (Jews) forged through their wilderness journeys, they referred to these ways of love as the Ten Commandments.
Then, in the New Testament, the disciples, who were Jewish, asked Jesus, “What is the greatest commandment?”
“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he [Jesus] said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. (—Matthew 22:36-39) [3]
Jesus cited an Old Testament passage from The Law:
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. (—Deuteronomy 6:4-7) [4]
He said to love God with all your heart, soul, and strength.
How do we love God with our broken hearts, unhealthy souls, and tormented minds? How do we love others if we don’t know how to love ourselves? The Great Commandment comes before the Great Commission:
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (—Matthew 28:16-20) [5]
God Loved Us First
I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. (—Exodus 20:5-6) [6]
It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the Lord set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but it is because the Lord loves you and is keeping the oath¼. Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations. (—Deuteronomy 7:7-9) [7]
I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore, I have continued my faithfulness to you.
(—Jeremiah 31:3) [8]
The Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. (—John 16:27) [9]
The Lord Created Us to Receive His Love and Love Him First.
We were created with the innate need to love and be loved. Scriptures are God repeatedly communicating just how much He loves each of us. He is communicating this message, “Let Me love you. Receive My love, so you may release My love.”
Love yourself enough to receive His love, which will bring healing to your broken heart, unhealthy soul, and tormented mind. The Lord wants to heal your broken heart from hurts of others. He wants to love your unhealthy soul (emotions) to healthy, well-adjusted emotions. The Lord is ready to calm your mind of the torment of your thinking that keeps you awake at night and strangles your peace.
We May Release His Love to Others.
When you have received His love, releasing His love to others comes naturally. We reveal who God is by loving others. So, release love when you receive Love. And He will fill you up again and again and again. Loving God first to receive His love is the only way we may truly love others. The Lord fills us with His love, so we will give agape (God’s love) to others.
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. (—Matthew 22:36-39) [10]
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (—John 13:34-35) [11]
As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. (—John 15:9-14) [12]
You may communicate your received love with others by your acts of kindness, generosity, and treating others in the ways you would like to be treated.
I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment.
Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness. Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. (—1 John 2:7-11) [13]
But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. (—Matthew 5:44) [14]
Abandoned Love May Be Restored
I [Jesus] have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. (—Revelation 2:4-5) [15]
If you have abandoned your love for the Lord, repent (change your life – change your thinking – change your hard heart) about God’s love, receiving and releasing His love. If we don’t repent, Jesus will remove your lampstand (a stand for supporting a lamp filled with oil (symbolic of the Holy Spirit) illuminating Jesus to the world.
How do I know about receiving the Father’s love and releasing His love to others? Let me share a brief part of my story with you.
Even as a seasoned Christ having received God’s love and accepting Christ as my Savior as a teenager, I didn’t clearly receive God as my Father until decades later. I had to change my thinking about seeing God as my Father.
It happened while I was alone in the comfort of my home. I simply asked, “Jesus, show me your view of my heavenly Father.” And He did.
The amazement. The tears. The closeness of my Father. And, so deeply personal. I asked and Jesus showed me using an image in my mind’s eye. I stood arm-in-arm with Jesus, while I tiptoed on His feet. We happily twirled in circles. When I looked down, to my surprise, Jesus was wearing my Daddy’s big black shoes. Jesus was identifying with my earthly father, even with all his flaws.I refrained from doing anything except settling in the rest of my heavenly Papa—to accept His tender, compassionate, and personal love for me.
Questions flooded my mind:
- I knew the vision projected a real relationship with my heavenly Father, but how would I express it?
- How would I convey this vision I had witnessed in my mind’s eye to paint a picture in the eyes of those who would hear me speak of it?
- How would spiritual growth occur in me to live this close to my heavenly Father?
The level of knowing and experiencing God as my Father and talking to Him in real and vital conversations are exciting ways to communicate love with Him.
Would you ask Jesus to show you His view of your heavenly Father?
He will show something specific for you. When you see Jesus’ view of God as your Father, the trajectory of your life will change forever, too. He will settle your wrestling heart and mind with His love and give you a rest you may otherwise never experience.
Rest is our weapon given to us by God. The Enemy hates it because he wants us stressed and occupied with life burdens and difficulties. —Author Unknown
