While growing up, did you ever hear, “Your grades are good, but they could be better? Who hasn’t heard something similar or even said something similar?
I don’t want good—I want better: better listening abilities, better loving ways, better living capabilities, better life-giving communication skills.
Some things are good, but some things are just “better.” Better: “Strong, excellent” are actually “better” words that describe what the author is attempting to define as the “Better” Covenant.
I found all the betters in:
- One place at the altar of Christ
- One person of Jesus, Himself
- One promise of God our Father
- One power of His Spirit
The Old Covenant (Old Testament) was built on the blood of animals. The New Covenant (New Testament) was built on the blood of Jesus Christ, God’s Son and God in the flesh. A covenant is an agreement, a coming together, a promise of undertaking. The New Covenant is all the above description between God-the Father, and God-the Son.
- Jesus is the Guarantor of a Better Covenant (7:22).
- Jesus is the High Priest with Better Promises of a Better Covenant
“The covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises” (8:6).
- Jesus is our Redemption of a Better Covenant
“He entered…by means of His own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption (9:12).
- Jesus is the “Once for All” sacrifice of a Better Covenant
“We have been sanctified through the offerings of the body of Jesus Christ once for all (10:10).
By coming to Jesus as the “better” guarantor, High Priest, Redeemer, and Final-Once for All Sacrifice, He takes me from good to better.
The “better” about finding this way, is that I don’t have to work for it, I don’t have to work to make it better, and I don’t have to expect to hear, “This is good, but it could be better. Jesus completed and made the way for this “new and living way” – the way of better.
Holy Spirit, please help me gain access to better (strong) listening skills of listening to You first. I pray that You reveal better (excellent) loving ways toward those around me. I pray that You train me in living the Christ-life, which is better (excellent) living ways. I pray, Holy Spirit give me better (strong) communication skills that are life-giving for those under the sound of my voice, in the presence of my life, and in the view of my ways. I pray that others will see the “better” that You possess in and through me.
