Believe: November 11 – Matthew 27 and Mark 15
Today’s Tasting: Matthew 27 & Mark 15
This account starts on the morning after the Chief Priests and the Elders of the people arrested Jesus. Once they held a consultation as to how to proceed with putting Him to death, they bound Him and led Him to the Governor, whose name was Pilate.
Jesus answered just one question posed by Pilate confirming that He was indeed the ‘King of the Jews’. All the other accusations of the priests and elders, plus the additional questions from the Governor went unanswered. And the scripture reads that Pilate marveled at Jesus’ composure. (My paraphrase).
The scripture further tells of Jesus’ endurance through a tortuous beating, mocking and severe ridicule. He was so weak afterwards, as He walked toward His execution, that a strong man from Cyrene was pulled from the crowd and forced to carry Jesus’ cross in His place.
Once on the cross Jesus refused the numbing wine-gall mixture. He bore the full effect of the pain and punishment on our behalf and did so willingly and deliberately.
After His crucifixion, Joseph, (a respected and noble man who, although He was a leader in the Jewish synagogue, was a believer in Jesus as the Messiah), gave Jesus a proper burial in his own new tomb.
The Roman guards warned Pilate that they needed to secure the tomb so that the disciples of Jesus would not pull a fast one and steal the body and report that Jesus had risen form the dead as He prophesied He would. Pilate gave orders for them to seal the tomb as best they could.
Today’s Nourishment: Jesus came for one purpose: to sacrifice Himself instead of us. He came to take the punishment for our sins, so that we could be presented before God in His pure, unblemished, sinless righteousness.
He was both willing and obedient to the purpose. He didn’t present His case for innocence before Pilate. He did not take the wine mingled with gall to numb the pain. He bore the full wrath of God and experience Hell for three days on our behalf. All because He loves us as God the Father so loves us.
Jesus now asks a simple request of you, of us. Believe. Just believe in Him. Do not fear, just Believe.
Will you believe that God’s Word was made flesh to dwell among us? His name is Jesus. He loves you more than ever and He wants you to spend your eternity with Him and the Father, our Lord God. The only way to God is through His Son, Jesus. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father, except through Him.
It’s a simple choice with eternal consequences. Trust Him with you eternity and trust Him with your day-to-day life. His love is eternal and He has promised never to leave you or forsake you. With Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you will be made whole. Jesus has chosen you. Choose Jesus.
